Additional informations

Construction of the infrastructure for the Sainte-Marguerite Mechanical Ventilation Plant (MVP). This project is part of a maintenance and rehabilitation program for the Montréal metro system. The project is located in the Southwest borough of Montréal, between Saint-Henri and Vendôme stations. The mechanical ventilation facility will be equipped with two (2) fans designed to extract warm air from the metro network to the outside environment, thereby addressing three (3) essential needs: passenger ventilation, nighttime ventilation for tunnel maintenance activities, and emergency ventilation for fire safety purposes.

Main work carried out

  • Excavation of overburden soils and earth retention using a Berlin wall system;
  • Rock excavation by drilling and blasting, including rock stabilization, all performed with in-house resources;
  • Waterproofing using a membrane applied over shotcrete;
  • Formwork and concrete placement for walls, slabs, and vaults;
  • Mechanical, TCPE (telecommunications, control, protection and electrical systems), and electrical works;
  • Installation of equipment;
  • Commissioning;
  • In addition to the technical challenges associated with the complexity of this type of work, the project also involves significant constraints related to limited workspace, noise, and vibration control, as the construction site is located only a few metres from residential buildings, the metro tunnel, and an STM rectifier substation;
  • Work inside the metro tunnel is also carried out during night shifts, including vault reinforcement to strengthen the structure prior to creating openings saw-cut directly into the walls of the existing metro tunnel.

Special methods and technical features

  • Rock excavation: approximately 25,000 tonnes;
  • Tunnel width: approximately 9 metres;
  • Total tunnel length: approximately 100 metres;
  • Shaft depth: approximately 25 metres;
  • Concrete volume: approximately 4,000 m³.
